LENGTH OF SHIFT:
The hours that an exchange point will be open varies, but can be for quite a long time between when the first runners come through and the last runners come through. Typically each exchange is staffed with volunteers in 2 shifts, each working 3-6-hours until their replacements show up or the exchange closes. This could vary and may be shorter or longer depending on the resources available and the speed of the runners (either faster or slower). Exchange Chiefs work the entire length of the Exchange Point (7-12 hours+). In addition to the Volunteers at the Exchanges there are also Exchange Point Coordinators who manage a set of Exchanges along the route (usually 5-10 exchanges). The Exchange Point Coordinators open the exchanges, brief volunteers and close the exchanges.
OTHER:
Volunteers are encouraged to dress in costume, decorate their exchanges, promote the team from which the originate and make their exchange point as fun, festive and safe as it can be. Teams are encouraged to provide enough volunteers for the entire duration of an exchange if possible. Prizes will be awarded for the best Exchange Point.
